I bought an 83 Johnson 25hp last night on CL for 200 bucks. Recoil is broken but that's a pretty simple fix.

I drained the lower unit tonight and was a little disappointed when a couple teaspoons of crystal clear water ran out.

What is the procedure for replacing the prop seals? It looks like there are two of them.

I would also like to do the shifter and drive shaft seals, but they look pretty straight forward.

Take it to a dealer and have it pressure and vacuum checked. That way you'll know exactly where it's leaking.

Might be an idea to see if the motor runs before spending too much money on repairs. For the price of a quart of oil, I would refill the unit and give it a test. Even if its just in a drum.

You should get her running and do a compression test like you said before you throw money at her.
You can buy a pressure /vacuum hand pump tester at harbor freight tools, then you can test your lower unit at the end of the season for the rest of your boating life.

Yes, that is the plan.

I'm confident that it will run.
