I have a 1983 60 hp Evinrude motor that I use for trolling for gamefish. It cut out on me twice on my last trip. It was running well and would then stop dead - no spluttering or misfiring! I then used it again for an hour aftwerwards and it was fine. Should I worry about this? What could it be?

sounds like a kill circuit could be failing, a pack could be failing or a trigger.
most overheat or lubrication failures are a kinda gradual power loss then quit and usually they dont run well after restart.
usually if its water in the carbs the water must be drained before it runs well again. all leads back to an ign failure. if you remove the black yellow wire from the rubber(amphenol) connector at the pack it removes the kill circuit. be aware there is no way to shut the motor off with it removed other than choking it. also be aware if you touch the pack side of that blk/yellow wire it will lite ya up:). not lethal at all but it will get your attention. its also possible the stator is failing, but if it runs its difficult to test, testing must be done when it quits.

could be the kill circuit - this motor has also been blowing fuses when electric choke is engaged

lj, rodbolt has some fine suggestions but I think you found your problem. You probably have a wired shorting out on your electic choke. Usually when you start blowing fuses the choke solenoid is the first plae I check. I don't understand why it would stop dead unless you used the choke while running. Check your wires to it and follow rodbolts advice.

So you've still got the problem with the fuses that you had a couple months ago? here's the thread from before just to keep it up to date.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=037379;p=1#000000

That fuse holder has a red wire that runs to your starter solenoid, there should be a red/purple wire that leads from the "B" post on the ign. switch to the red engine harness and from there to the other side of that fuse holder. You really should see if you can locate and fix that problem.

Have you got a wiring diagram? if not maybe I can post it or email it.
