83 75 hp won't always return to idle...

Seems like it sticks maybe, just about an 1/8 of an inch from hitting adle screw. Sometimes does ok, sometimes not. Starts great, runs great, idles great, when it goes all the way to screw. Did replace cables with oem recently, set all up properly, no problems. Is there some sort of return spring, can't find one. I'm thinking maybe sticky grease... but everything else seems smooth enough. Any advice appreciated...

Make sure the ignition wire "bundle" isn't getting hung up or pinched. Sometimes the wire retainers (clamps) are closed so tight on the wires that they restrict thier movement.

thanks oldcat, checked that and all is well. Could the handle be off by one notch maybe and cause that? Did just replace the two platic parts, throttle/shift cam and shift lever. There seems to be a gap between the cam slot and the pin that rides in it from throttle lever...?

Thanks for the input... gonna grab a bite and get back to it. Think I'm gonna try and move the handle one noth in the appropriate direction and see what happens... Thanks again

make sure that you've taken-up the cable backlash before adjusting / connecting the throttle cable.

Gotcha Bluefin, That maybe what the problem is from my initial rebuild. Appreciate it...

i went through the same monkey business this weekend.

make the adjustment, cycle the shifter through the throttle range a few times and see where she lands and incrementally adjust if needed...paying particular attention to the cam roller position. come to think of it, it wouldn't hurt to check your link-n-sync beforehand.

did the link-n-sync, all good. Everything is great from start, to shift, to wot and idle when it comes all the way back to screw. It appears there is a spring washer missing from the fast idle lever ***. That may? be causing the slack also. wasn't there when I took it apart so didn't know it was missing.
This cam is after market stuff, seems maybe the slot for the throttle pin is a tad wide, like 1/16 in both sides.
Don't know, gonna keep at it, thanks for the help

Had that problem on my 84 75 hp. Finally took gear shift apart. Bushing inside was shot for the fast idle lever.

Checked that and bushing ok but there is a spring washer missing, but it has been missing before these problems. Swapped cables and it is better, now only about 1/16 from bottoming out on idle screw. And, the throttle cable (new oem) is bottomed out also, no more adj., thought that odd for a new cable. Shift cable is close to center adj. and works perfectly. I have studied the blown up diagram and have checked and rechecked all I know but am obviously missing something. ???

I had this condition with no adjustment left in cables:

I thought fit was okay. Took to a mechanic & he said this part was just too sloppy.

He replaced and problem fixed.

Thanks LL, I have been suspicious of that but it looks ok. It fits tight in the hole but I can't see how well it fits in the follower. I will get it ordered. When I ordered the shift cam and throttle follower I told them I wanted all the plastic parts inside. Maybe he couldn't get that.
Thanks again, Great pic too...

Re: 83 75 hp won't always return to idle...

I've had that same problem with a 90hp Johnson. I took the entire throttle arm and linkage apart off the motor. The grease was so hard, I had to scrape it out of all the bushings etc. Reassembled with lubriplate and it works correctly now. I also found that the previous owner tried to compensate by changing the throttle plate adjustment and had one of the carbs slightly open at idle. Created a lean pop sometimes at idle until I resynced the carbs.
