Just bought a 1983 Striper 17ft with a rebuilt (less than 20 hrs) '83 Evinrude 75hp. Great shape. Very clean and tight, excellent gellcoat and hull condition (apparently garage kept most of its life). Plan to use nearshore and inshore, tidal creeks and rivers, along the Ga coast. Think I got a good boat, but can't find much information. Think I got a fair price ($4,500), but can't find any comparables. So ... does anyone own one of these little Whalers or know about them? Seems similar to a Montauk, but hull looks a little different. Assume that's a decent 3-cyl motor as well. But again, don't know anyone who has one or knows about. Any insights would be very welcomed. Thanks.

Nice package. Are you sure it's a 17'?

I have seen Striper 15's but not a 17? But, that doesn't mean they do not exist.

I have a 15' Center (custom).

The most important issue with Whalers is making sure that the hull remains sealed. Any deck or hull leaks will quickly soak the foam core.

Look over any hardware mountings and the hull. Seal anywhere you think may allow water into the hull.

There are a couple of Whaler owners here on the board.

We want pictures!:)

Howdy rcrook.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The Striper 17 is a great fisherman's boat and you got a terrific price. The JohnnyRude triple looper is the perfect engine for it, too.

You can get a lot of info on all Boston Whalers at www.continuouswave.com.

Good luck. :)
