I just bought an 83 Evinrude 50HP engine. It seems to run great but would like to do a "tune up" before using it.

1) What kind of spark plugs are recommended?

2) About how much and what kind of oil for the lower unit?

Anything I'm missing?

Thanks,

Gary

Not sure of plugs, but I get a quart of quicksilver and a $7 lower unit pump from wal mart and thats plenty to fill up the lower unit. If you havent changed the thermostat or waterpump in a while (or ever) it would be wise to consider doing both of those. And obviously make sure your idle speed is set at about 950rpms when in gear, out of the water.

Sure, unless you have a tach and can set it at idle speed, in gear, on the water. In that case youd want it to be around 750rpms. I likle to set it in the driveway, and then do any fine tuning whilst on the water.

Thanks. I've got a tach on the way so I should be able to do it either way.
