83 Mercury 50 trouble

Hi all,

recently bough an 82 blazer trihull boat. It starts and runs fine, after launching and trying to palne out it looses power and sounds like its sputtering. It wont run over 5 mph. I have cleaned carburetors twice, i checked timing today and on plug #1 the timing is everywhere. It doesnt hit in just one place. Anyone have any ideas? Also replaced all fuel lines and a fresh tank of gas. Plugs look good

Welcome to iboats.

How did it run before you bought it, did you test drive it?

Have you done a compression test?

Have you verified spark on all plugs?

Has the hull been inspected for saturated flotation foam?

Inspect plugs for condition, oil, dry, excess fuel.

DO NOT mess with the timing, it rarely gets out of adjustment, there are many other more likely causes.

ps, responses may be a little slow coming , as this is a major holiday/vacation/boating week.
