83 mercury 70hp gearbox?

I have a 1983 70hp mercury just bought with boat took out for a test run everything was great until tried reverse it works but not very well at all so will a 82 50hp foot work or where can I find a list of one's that will

What do you mean reverse works, but not very well? It could be a simple shift cable adjustment.

As long as it a 3 cylinder 50..4 cylinder 50 is different ratio

It spins in reverse but doesn't have any pull making steerage from sitting still was to much if it was a car I'd say clutch slipping
How big of a deal is ratio if I'm changing prop no matter what I honestly don't know so thank you very much for your responses

As soon as I get home I'll check the cable to make sure it's pushing all the way back I know right now when shifter is in reverse you can spin prop both ways clicks but can spin without spinning motor

Might be as simple as an adjustment of the shift cable. The clicking is the lugs of the clutch dog touching the lugs of the gear, telling me it's almost engaging. Remove the cowlings, then the shift cable. See if the slider that the cable attaches too will slider further back to fully engage reverse gear.

Figured it out I think / maybe when I got boat the po had started taking apart in attempt to remove foot for water pump change cables were off I didn't have them on when I resemble the foot got shifter shafts one tooth off Rev engaged when I took cable off and pulled shifter to very very end of slot looks like foots coming back off lesson learned thanks for the input everyone. Would still love a link for compatible gear box's I couldn't find any
