Does the clutch dog go in as pictured in the breakdown diagram or does the dog need to be turned on the shaft to cover the detent ***. with the larger side of the dog ?

Re: 83 rude / clutch dog

I wondered if the detent would be exposed and pop out.The way it is configured in the diagram it doesn't look like there's enough to keep the detent in when you throw it in gear. The throw at either shifter (engine and console) seem's longer than what the dog will allow.Does this make any sense ? Don't want to make any mistake's. Just wanna fish...

without knowing the year, most OMC stuff either had a p or a groove cut on the prop side of the dog.

should have a groove cut arournd the OD of the dog on the end that faces the propeller.

Thank's.I'll keep my eye open for a groove or distinguishing mark and install the dog exactly the way it is positioned in the breakdown diagram...
