Having some trouble with my side control box. I would like to give the motor a little gas, on a cold start, but can't move the lever forward without it prop engaging.
Also noticed two holes on the forward lower side panel for acess to some adjusting screws. I beleieve one said tension? How are these adjusted? I can't find any information about these screws. Would these help with my above problem?
Thanks for your help!

does this control have 2 levers or a single lever? One smaller lever and the main throttle/shift lever? Did you try pulling out on the shift lever when in neutral to see if that disengages the shift and is used for warm up? Also, could be a button you push on the control that will allow it to raise the idle speed without going in gear.

Previous post from roscoe

If you have QuickSilver controls, there is a button on the side of the control housing. Right at the base of the shift lever, in the center that it pivots around, big button with the name on it.

You push it in, then push the throttle forward to increase idle speed. Pushing this button allows you to move the throttle without the engine shifting into gear.

Rick,
Thanks for your reply.
Looks like I have the quicksilver control. Single arm with a button on top of the lever and at the pivot. Push in the pivot button to keep the motor from going into gear.(O.K.)
Now what do the screw holes on the lower front panel adjust?
About to winterize the motor and put it storage for the winter here in NH. My first boat, it's going to be a long winter. :(

Operators manual says top screw is detent adjustment screw, changes the amout of effort it takes to move control handle in/out of neutral position.Lower screw adjust tension on control handle, its to keep the handle in position so you don't have to hang on to it.Turn screw cw(in) to increase tension, ccw(out)to decrease tension.Caution for both screws(DO NOT TURN FRICTION SCREW ALL THE WAY OUT,CCW)

scruffy_fish

May I also suggest a Factory Manual for your Motor if you don't already have one. Worth the money!

Factory Manual

Re: '84 50 HP Mariner side contol questions

Rick,
I already have a Clymer factory manual, but it didn't have the mechanicals for the side control, only the wiring. Unless I missed it.
Been working on this boat/motor since August. Rewired the electricals in the boat and on the trailer. Rebuilt carbs, replaced water pump, fuel lines, and water jacket cover.
It saw the water last weekend and thats when I found I had to replace the fuel lines. Now I have to winterize it. Looking forward to spring in NH.
