I can't figure out how to wire my tilt/trim i've got wire diagrams and checked components with a multimeter. AQ125A, w/270 Volvo sterndrive. As soon as I put the 30 amp fuse in it blows

I added that I have an AQ125A with a 270 Volvo sterndrive. Also when I got the boat the wiring was all ripped out from a thief

Thanks, correction of tilt only noted. I took a look, and it would appear that I may have been misled about it being a 270! Mine looks different, the tilt motor has two wires, brown and black with a black box on top, with two resistors and a switch. The engine has a 30 amp fuse holder coming off 40 amp circuit breaker, I assumed the tilt harness cnnected to the fuse holder and to engine ground, my bad!

You may have a 280 outdrive instead of a 270. Both were used on the 125A.

Here's a link to the manual for a 280, it has the 2 wire tilt motor on the mechanical lift.

Instead of resistors, are you sure those aren't 2 relays ?????

O.K. you are correct. Relays, one forup and one is for down. I'll try to get my nomenclatures accurate. I'm going to take a look now

Re: '84 Capri 1600 tilt/trim keeps blowing fuses

Thanks, looks like I have the AQ285, AQ285A. It shows that I should install an overload circuit breaker between the the minus wire, (earth),(blue), from the flywheel housing. Also the wire diagram shows a 20 amp fuse in the holder [from the 40 amp circuit breaker on the engine?] My local boat dealer insisted it should be a 30 amp fuse, should i get a 20 amp fuse and a 20 amp overload circuit breaker? The diagram also shows a wire connected to 30 (+) on the starter motor, both connect to the tilt harness black wire (black to red fuse holder ?) and the up down switch is connected to ignition switch. So does that mean the relays control two seperate hot circuits?

One problem you have having with understanding this whole process, is that the relays are not one for up and one for down. One is switching the hot wire and one the ground. Black is ground, red is postive and it takes both to go up or down. If you hook it up the way you are thinking, it will blow fuses because you are building in a short.

You're correct, I do not understand this at all! I wouldn't even be wasting all this time trying to figure out how to re-do everything and replace everything a low life thief took in a matter of one hour while I was having lunch with my kids and playing a few games and talking about what a great time they had that morning on our boat! I've been at this for weeks... now their summer is over and I am almost done, I'm more of a visualizer, forgive me for not understanding what I can't see! I do not remember what it looked like before it was ripped out.

Okay, then... I just re-checked the wiring compared to the diagrams. When I check with a multimeter there is some resistence when I hook the power inputs to the relays, these are brand new. I'm still unclear what size overload circuit breaker to get. I've jumped the motor and it works up and down.

Re: '84 Capri 1600 tilt/trim keeps blowing fuses

Don, forgive my frustrated outburst the other day. Not very professional on my part. I re-read your post several more times. Then it hit me what you said about the switching. I made two copies of the wiring diagram and ignored the wire colors, in the up switch position, I traced the hot path in red and the ground path in black. On the other copy in the down position paths. And there it showed a clear picture of what I was doing wrong. I then took all the wires off of everything ( the relays and switch in the box) and followed the diagram. Hooked in an overload circuit breaker and new fuses. Then I reconnected the ground to the battery. When I turned on the ignition switch I didn't hear the fuse pop and the indicater light was on. My first thought,"Damn, Don was right!" The tilt works fine. Now I can winter-up. Thanks for the advice.
