I was running engine at home for first time this year (after draining fuel tank and topping off with fresh fuel mix 50:1)I touched the heads and standing at rear of boat the left side was considerately hotter to the touch than the right side..what should or could I check first? The water stream was comming out in a good steady stream and was hot then cold as the thermostats were working,at least one of them..

The telltale is ahead of the thermostat housing and only indicates impeller flow. You can have a good impeller and still overheat. The cooling water passes through the (each thermostat) thermostat housing on it's way out of the block into the midsection. Two thermostats regulate water flow out of the block-one for each head. You will probably want to get into the thermostat housing and have a look. Likely there is a problem with one of the thermostats inside the thermostat housing-preventing flow out of that side of the block. If you decide to replace the thermostat, do them both.

I took boat to lake this morning put on water to run and check temp.left side was 145 the right was 135 after running wot for five minutes. Another question when i was turning it felt like it was slipping and lost speed when i got sraight it felt like it grabbed and took off again.no grinding or noise from engine any ideas on what that could be?

Typically, an engine will not overheat at planing speeds, since the pressure relief valves open to provide extra cooling water. Check the temps after idling. If you have the engine mounted high on the transom, the prop can ventilate when going around corners, then bite again when the boat straightens out.
