Can't figure out how to get starter motor loose from mounting bracket. Don't appear to be any nuts/bolts holding this assembly together. NOTE: The bracket is a cast item and the starter mounts up through the bottom, with the bendix sticking out the top. There are NO other mounting points on the side or bottom of the motor.

The starter motor is usually attached to bracket with screws at the bottom of the starter motor.

Bolts go all the way thru the starter. You will probably have to take the bottom bracket out at the same time.

I just replaced brushes in my 83 35hp Johnson....and it was a biatch to get it together as the brushes extend upwards and hard to get the lower case on..I had to make a tool to compress them out of the putty knife..then slide it out once the armuter shaft entered the bushing area...

works like a charm now..

Thanx for the tip. I am replacing the entire starter motor, so I am hoping not to run into any reassembly probs. Doing it tomorrow. Will let y'all know how it turns out.
