84 johnson 140 h.p. white smoke, or steam

motor has white smoke looks like steam coming out with exaust,motor runs great,does not apear to be overheating,can put hand on heads. has psi gauge for water,showing from 5 to 30 psi depening on speed of motor. what should psi reading be?. also has great water flow out upper exaust. just got boat dont know if water pump has ever been worked on.

Hi cs,<br />Welcome to the board. Your engine is a 2-cycle and of course the gas has 2-cycle oil mixed in it. It's normal to see the white smoke. It's just the oil in your gas burning.

Steam can be normal too, although it wouldn't hurt to service the water pump if it's been a while since the impeller has been changed. Your water pressure sounds good though and it will increase at higher rpm. Just how much steam are you seeing? I don't really think you have a problem. Some steam like I said is normal.

Steam means water is entering the cylinder and that is not normal. Inspect your plugs, they should be slightly wet with fuel and oil. If you find one that is overly clean that will be your problem cylinder. It seems highly possible you have a head gasket leaking water into the cylinder. Removing the head and replacing the gasket should take you an hour or so and cost about $15. Not much time or money. I would replace both headgaskets and get a good look at all cylinders.<br />Good Luck Brian

I checked plugs no signs water,plugs look good. i can only see some amouts steam at low or idle speeds,heads have new gaskets,head work done before i got boat.dont know to what exstent.Im,thinking maybe water pump starting to go?.<br /><br />thanks for help.
