84 mariner stator? or flywheel?

i have an 84 75hp mariner, that wants to be a hit or miss engine, after rebuilding carbs, replacing all plugs, coils, powerpack and a few broken plastic parts, and it still would not start everytime, xample, monday it starts runs like a new harley, same on tuesday thru thursday, come friday afternoon? nothing, spins pisses water but no start. paid a mechanic to install a new stator from iboats last year, it ran great. until this year. started trying to use the boat since april. been doing a lot of paddling. finally removed the flywheel today, found burnt plastic on it and the stator looks to be where it came from. hope the pics come thru...

That is not the correct way to remove the flywheel !

we understand it was not the (correct way of removal) but when you are down and don't have a boat mechanic around with correct tools, you do what you gotta do.... but that has nuttin to do with my question.... i am looking for answers as to whether or not this is the correct way it is suppose to look, and if not what could be the reason as to why it is what it is.... any real mechanics out there?

Either the flywheel has a bad spot or the upper bearing is bad letting crankshaft flex. If it was a high spot on stator it would have rubbed the flywheel 360 degrees.

thank you Fatzbullet, that is good to know, we will check to see if there is any play at the top most likely so. we bought this boat and motor from a guy just outside of mountain home, arkansas who claimed to be selling for his dad. boat cranked up rightaway ran great in a barrel of water, but when we got home 5hours away, it's been hit or miss ever since. we have actually put it in a lake 3 times and had to paddle back each time. is it possible to change out the upper crank bearing without rebuilding the engine? or should i be looking for another motor all together? thanks

there seems to be about a 64th of an inch movement with the flywheel back in place. if that much. but we cleaned the plastic off the flywheel with a good carb cleaner that melted the plastic off. but it still would not start. we are thinking about coating the bare spots on the stator with (plasti-dip) just in case that is causing a short.
