I had an issue like this before and it was the momentary kill switch that is part of the "shift cable rocker" deal, sorry I don't know proper terminology but there is a kill switch there to stop spark when you shift into drive and mine was stuck. Also it is not recommended to use a regular coil because that thunderbolt doesn't actually advance the timing, it increases and decreases spark based on engine speed determined by the magnetic pick-up in the distributor.
