I have a 1984 mercruiser 280 serial number a420778 based on label on valve cover. The boat is a 1984 century 3000 lx run about.

This year I continually lose power steering (trim) fluid. Like a container every two weeks or so. I use the boat maybe once or twice a week. I store it out of water when not in use. It leaks while not running.

This year I stated noticing "rainbow oil effect" in the drain water after removing the hull plug after use. Once I saw this I started checking all fluids before each use. The oil was not at all low and initially it was had to tell the power steering fluid was going down. I continued to see the rainbow effect in the drain water but kind of blew it off. I could not see any fluids leaving and stop checking the oil on each use. I then tried starting the engine a few weeks ago and noticed the power steering pump did not sound right. I shut it down, checked the fluid, and could see that it was low. Added PS/trim fluid and the pump sounded like normal again. So I at least now knew the it was ps/trim fluid drain from the hull. I aways had power steering during these times.

I tried to find the leak. Followed the mainline (non return) from the pump to the to the power steering unit. All connections looked dry. Then followed the line from the ps unit down near the crank line of the engine (port side of boat) where there was a connection an metallic assembly that also had a water hose passing thru it. (power steering fluid cooler?) Then an additional line from this assembly returned to the pump.

All of the Power steering line connections looked dry except for the one down low near the assembly with the water lines. It looks and feels oily. Here both of the fluid lines had clamps holding the hoses to the assembly. But I did not try to re-secure them until I learned a little more of what I was dealing with. The assemebly was behind the engine mount and it looked like it might be hard to remove and resecure the ps fuild lines.

I am on a fixed income and have a lot of time on my hands. If this is something I can handle I will give it a shot. But I always could go to my local marina where it will at least be a 300 bill. (im guessing)

Any suggestions? I do not work so well upside down but I think that is required for this assembly. Or maybe the assemebly is easily removed and new lines attached to the assemebly and the reinstalled.?.

Just looking for suggestions...

Thanks,

Alan

If they are screw type clamps, you might be able to get a small 1/4" drive ratchet/socket on them and "snug" them up.

Those Coolers are sometimes problematic, in that they are Not drained properly,+ They Freeze,+ Crack.......
You don't state Where you live,.... If it get's Cold,.... It's Probably Cracked..........

Replacements are a Dime a Dozen on ebay,.. Most Times.....

Other than being in such a Bear of a spot to get too,.......
The actual Swap is Easy,...... 2 water lines, with screw clamps,+ 2 oil lines, with screw clamps.........

Re: '84 merc 280 power steering fluid cooler leaking...

thanks yepblaze and bondo,

I live in Indiana and contract out the winterizing/de-wintering with a marina that also handles my winter storage. Theses costs are my annual bills on the boat that I budget for.

The boat never stays in the water (overnight) and there is always excessive water in the boat when I pull it out of the water. I used to think it was just run-off from skiing (water from suits, ski and such) but it is more like a gallon per day. I have tried to look for leaks but have never found one. Maybe it is leaking from this ps cooler? But yesterday I was running the boat at my house with a hose/ears clamp and I did not find any water in the hull. Ran it for about 10 minutes or until the temp came up. I think the gauge stated about 160 degree and the splash felt hot.

I will try to tighten up the clamps today to see if we get the pHs fluid to stop leaking.

Then I will try inserting the hull plug to capture any water that might be leaking and run the engine with the hose/ear clamps in my driveway. If I do not find any water I will go back to the reviewing what might be leaking around the transom.

If I do find that the ps cooler is cracked and needs replaced, how does it mount? Is it just flopping around on the water line or is it mounted to the block in some way?

Is there a model number for the ps cooler? I do not have a manual nor did I see any labels of the cooler when I was down there. I would like to get my hands on the cooler before I try removing my old one. Any more hints? Where should I go to get another ps cooler. Bondo suggested ebay. That might work. Are there other sources? What about iboats? This is my first dealing with iboats forum but the community seems great so I would like to support them if it is possible.

Thanks again,

alan
