You have to take these post for what they are...post, anybody from Kidrock to Saltysam can say something right or wrong.

Most of what i read seems to be legit in fact some of this very valuable info you will only find here, fat chance at learning this much stuff at your $80.00 hr marina.

You found your problem the prop (Thanks for sharing), the prop was probably put on there to help sell it? who knows.

Think Vegas Baby, its like rolling the dice on buying a used boat and engine.:D

OK maybe i responded a bit too strong to your comments, but replacing parts like a fuel pump or cleaning a carb was a good thing for your motor they get dirty and ware out. Replacing perfectly good coils on the other hand was a wast of money and something you can check with a simple tester and DVA adapter. My rant about educating yourself is a must for anyone on here, there is a way to eliminate problems on your own, step by step. If you have issues and need help, BUY AN OEM BOOK FOR YOUR MOTOR READ IT COVER TO COVER AND THEN COME ON HERE AND ASK QUESTIONS. You WILL save yourself time and aggravation! Your questions will then be more specific and you'll get better advice. When you say your boat is just not accelerating, and then can say it's not a,b,c our answers will closer to the problem. You get my point.......

Yhere is one thing about these old mercurys, they just keep on going and going and going. When i was being told my merc was shot and needed rebuilt i saw a posting on craiglist of a 1978 skeeter with a merc 150 hp on it so i went and looked at it. It had not been in the water or started in 10 years the guy told me. all the wireing and everything had been unhooked and just laying around in the back of the boat was a mess to look at but i figured i would try to see if it would start. 1st thing i did was figure out which wires went to the starting it and the guy got a battery to use to try to start it. Then i found the dsitriptor wires and hooked them up. had to take the gas hose off the tank and stuck it in a gallon of gas, the guy didnt no you had to mix oil with the gas, lol then he hunted down the key and i hooked up the water hose to it and pumped up the gas and i couldnt not believe it actualy started right up withing 3 or 4 turn over of the engine. Then i noticed the pisser was not pissing so i assumed the water pump was shot. I took the water pisser off at the block and saw it was just stopped up, so i cleand it out then restarted the motor. man she purred like a kitten. sounded so sweet to my ears. all gears worked perfect. Man i thought i had found a jewel now if i could only get him to lower his price down. so i offered him 500.00 for just the motor without the boat and the wife said no, so i left and didnt buy it. But it goes to show you that these mercs can sit for years and still start and run awsome. I will remember where it is if i ever do a project boat.

they will keep going IF treated right. Prop for 5500 WOT, good gas w/ no water in it, 18 deg timing at WOT, new impeller every 3 years, clean carbs, decarb every year, etc....
