'84 OMC 3.0 tilt/trim

My trailering switch on the dash works . The switch on the throttle doesn't, although I can hear the solenoid clicking. Do both these switches control the same motor or are these seperate systems?

Sep systems. The switch on the throttle is to trim the boat while underway. I think on the OMC Stringers it actually tilts the entire engine/outdrive assembly via adjustable engine mounts.<br /><br />The trailering switch is for the tilt system which is an electric motor that tilts up the outdrive and should always be all the way 'down' while underway.<br /><br />These systems are prone to failure on the OMCs, good luck with it!<br /><br />Tom

Snake is right. They are two different systems. On mine it says “tilt” which tilts the drive up for tailoring. The other switch for trim is also on the throttle. When the tilt is engaged you will hear the solenoids click and then engage the tilt mechanism. When you engage the trim you won’t hear any solenoids clicking (at least you don't with mine and its a 83). I’m pretty sure there are no solenoids for the trim. You have two hydraulic rams, one on each side of the engine. As mentioned the whole engine is lifted or lowered to trim the boat.

no hyd rams on a 3.0, there's a worm screw electric lift as part of the front engine mount. Could be the motor, the wiring, the relays or the worm mechanism may have seized up. When did you last grease it? ......<br />That's what I thought...

Just remembered, check the (2?) 50amp fuses on top of the engine, they are in a blue-green inline fuse holder. If one of those fuses is blown, the soleniod will still click because the (low-amperage) activation circuit is seperate, but the (high-amperage) circuit controlled by the solenoid is dead because of the fuse.<br /><br />And keep a handfull of those 50A fuses in the boat, they are a pain to find! I got mine from an internet electronics store, sorry I forget the name.<br /><br />Tom

Yeah those 50amps can be a pain to find. I think my damn local marina charged me $5 a piece for them. Only place I could find them.

Check your local car stereo shops that sell the big "boom box" amps that rattle your windows.

I have a 85 Galaxy with a 2.5 liter and I am having a problem with my trim/tilt motors only working when the motor is running at about 2000 rpms. If i want the tilt to lift the stern drive i need someone to lift on it.
