I picked up a boat that has a 85 120hp evinrude motor on it. The prev owner sheered the lower unit off. so they junked the lower end as it was mangled.

I found (locally) a 88 90hp evinrude motor with a rod hanging through the block but supposedly has a good lower end.

Do these have the compatibility to make into 1 fully functional motor?

I am fairly new (first boat in 15yrs) to this, but would like to stay on the cheap but also try to be as reliable as possible. I know the 2 dont go together well but i cann hope......right?

Any useful input would be awesome. Thanks, Rick

Taz is correct. That year/model engine takes a V6 lower gearcase.

That engine uses the V-6 housing as gearing is different in a V-4 looper. You will need a 120/140 looper lower unit to get it back going.

Can any of you let me know as specifically as possible as i am new to boating, but have a good mechanical knowledge, what motor years and HP's that i can use the lower end from just in case i can find one with a blown powerhead?!?

I would greatly appreciate it. Need to get my project boat in the water with the ability to power itself in forward motion.
Let me know please.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Depends on the mid-section; what is the model number of the 120 and does the present gearcase have a 13 spline or 15 spline propshaft?

Generally, the large gearcase has a 15 spline propshaft and would come from a V4 motor to have the correct gears. 1978 to 1992 would work, but you need the correct shift shaft.

You are going to have to watch the gearset in the lower. Even though the engine takes the V6 gearcase, the gearset is a V4 ratio: 13:26. It's a pretty unusual combination.

Mid section is from the orig motor. Engine code is E120TLCOS. Prop shaft is NON Existant as well. No prop shaft, No shift shaft. My understanding is that is was "mangled" so it was removed. I can source almost any combo of these parts, but nobody has had a clear cut answer as to what i need that will 100% work.
I have been told that any lower unit from a 90 degree V4 Looper engine from 1980-1992 will work. Can anyone confirm this or dismiss it?
