What is the serial #?
Some have heads and on some it's all one piece?

Yes, I have already purchased those 2 gaskets, #26 & #28. Right now I have everything disconnected and trying to get the powerhead off so I can change them. Either I need a second set of hands or a hoist to lift it out. Any suggestions??

On my 60, they were easy to access with the cowling off. I don't think you need the entire power head. If you can post a pic, I might be able to help.

there is no way to access the bottom 3-4 bolts w/o lifting 3-4 inches.

Is the bottom cowling in the way? can you possibly move it out of the way?

I was hoping that as well. I have it loose but there is not enough play in it to get to the bottom ones that go through the shift linkage.

You said through the shift linkage. Can you get them loose?

Is there any chance you can post a pic?

you can actually post it on the thread. When you reply, click on the little paper clip at the top.

Man... There has to be a way. It's hard to tell from those pic's. Can you make them any bigger.
If you end up pulling the power head somebody didn't do a good design job.

tfendley:
O got to looking at some blow-ups of the different assemblies on your motor. It looks like the Drive Shaft Housing trim piece attaches to the top of the drive shaft house with bolts up through the bottom. Then the bottom cowling attaches to that. IF this is the case, you might be able to take this trim piece loose and slide everything down out of the way.

Do you have a manual for your engine? It might have a way to help you out. Also, it would be good to have when reassembling.

Re: 85' 35hp merc. water in top cylinder

The lower cowling will not slide completely down if you remove the lower 'horse collar' wraparound cowl. The center section (exhaust tower or 'mid') interferes with the I.D. of the motor 'pan'.

But, removing that lower cowl might let the motor pan slide down enough to get at the manifold bolts. I can't recall if that motor has inner brackets bolted from the top of the motor to the lower cowl, if it does it'll help to pull the bolts out of those since they also will prevent the pan from sliding down much.

Of course, you would have had to remove the 'horse collar' anyway to get at the powerhead nuts!

This is just the way the older Mercs were designed, 60hp Dude oughta be happy he's got a 'clamshell' cover to remove!!! A lot easier to get at everything fer sur!!!

BTW make sure you have removed all the powerhead nuts. There are 2 nuts at the very front of the motor, one per side, which aren't so obvious unless you're looking for them. This is also a convenient prying point for a 'wonder bar' or similar flat prying implement, as you can pry against the transom brackets for leverage.

Once you break the gasket loose the powerhead should come right off.

Yep, I am VERY happy mine is a clam shell type.

Hopefully, there is an easy way for "tfendley" to get the exhaust cover plat off without having to pull the whole power head.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I do have all powerhead nuts off. I really don't see any other way but removing the powerhead, I will look at that lower cowling a little closer though. My service manual only shows pulling the powerhead before removing that plate. The powerhead is loose, I just think it has to come straight up which makes it a little harder for one person.

If Murphy's law hold true, you will find an easy way AFTER you have the power head off.

Good luck. let us know what you find.
