Re: 85' 35hp merc. water in top cylinder
I just pulled out the powerhead and changed all the gaskets on my 1985 Mercury 35. The job was very easy to do. The power head is probably only 50 pounds, and so it wast very heavy to lift by myself. You do have to take out the power head to change the baffle plate to exhaust cover and baffle plate to the cylinder block gaskets. Be very careful with the bolts. I managed to slowly break all of the free and let some WD40 work them loose. Since you are pulling out the power head, you will have to change the gasket underneath the power head. It is called the exhaust plate to powerhead gasket. I will suggest changing the gasket below the exhaust plate as well.
Also, you might want to change your transfer port and fuel pump gaskets as well since these are much easier to do with the powerhead out.
I suggest removing your lower unit before pulling the powerhead this way when you move your shift shaft asssembly you won't be messing with your gears.
