It sounds like you have a clutch dog in the gear case going out. This dog slides on a splined surface of the prop shaft, and engages forward, or reverse gear. After time it will wear on the leading surface, rounding it off, and will no longer hold engagement. Don't run it that way! You may be lucky, and only have to replace the dog. Otherwise! you will need to change the dog, and forward gear.

You have the year correct, What service manual do you have? One thing that can be difficult is installing the spring, and two detent balls in the clutch dog. There is a special tool made by OMC for this. You will also need the snap-ring pliers shown in the manual.

A 2 -225 can't be a an OMC manual. Yes, you can make the special tool for the ball's, and spring, but you need a lathe.

Are you using remote cables for the drive lever? If you are check to see that they are functionning properly and that the lever is fully engaged at all times. My 30 hp Johnny did that when the cable for the lever adjustment wasn't set properly for the drive lever.

Yes this does have a remote steering. I checked the adjustment and it seems to be OK. Is the gear itself you need to look at in the lower unit or the indention where the dog on the clutchdog hooks into the gear lug?? I do have good spark..squeezing the fuel ball does not help the problem. But it is hard to time it when it acts up , because I have remote controls. I guess I might have to tear the lower unit back down..Any more ideas?? thanks
