i have read many posts on here and i have not come across any conclusive answer.

i am trying to overcome bad check valves in the fuel pump on my Force, one day it will do 40 mph loaded all; day long, the next day its a dead duck!

Its definately a sticking center check valve.

My problem is 2 fold, i am finding it almost impossible to locate new parts for the pump. And the second i cannot trust it.

Is there any kind of retro fit to an electric pump at all? i know the importance of all the vacum lines etc coming fromn the pump, also that cyl no 1 provides the "action" to the diaphram.

i am good with schematics but the Seloc manual seems to be a waste of time when it comes to the fuel and electrical systems and i do not want to ruin an otherwize great running motor (sitting for 4 years, new stator, cdi units and coils).

Please advise.

Try parts for an 88 Force. The pump is almost identical, only difference might be in the two rear cover bolts. At any rate, If you know the center button valve is sticking, why don't you just take it out and relace or clean it? Yeah, you can get them! Try franzmarine@aol.com.

I went and bought an electric pump, cost was modest, but have not yet installed it and am not sure whether I will. There are definite pros and cons.

I retrofitted the fuel pump on my 1988 125HP motor (which has the 3 check valves) to a later model square shaped Mercury fuel pump for that very reason. Simple to do. You just need to get a by-pass port cover from a later model Force motor that uses the square pump. Found a used on on-line. Why did I do this....the check valves on the newer pumps are designed differently and as far as I can tell, are not as prone to sticking. Also, the re-build kits for the square pumps come with new components for the check valves in addition to the diaphragm and gaskets. You change the check valves each time you rebuild the pump. Rebuild kit for the square pump can be purchased for less than $10. Just the check valves are $4 or $5 each on the old pumps.

Re: 85 85HP force retro fit to electric fuel pump.

Thank you,

After breaking down again Fri night with my 2 little ones, i managed to trawl the internet Saturday and found the check valves.

i am definately going to retrofit the pump in the winter. A lot of people slate these motors but i am finding it pretty simple to work on and i think the power ratio on it is very good.

now i have got over most of the problems, it smokes a lot less, and is very forgiving especially as being a novice i made a few mistakes with fuel oil ratio, timing set-ups etc.

Hopefully this week sees the arrival of the new check valves! and i am out for 3 days this week at Taylorsville lake!

As for repairing what i have! i tried, i submersed it in seafoam for a day, tried to get rid of the lip on the upper part of the valve (seems to belly out), worked great and gave me 40+ but then reverted back to how it was. Just cannot trust a repair on the valves.

Thanks for all our help again!
