when your running round for the compression tester and timing light....

if you can remember to get a socket for the prop as well.....

The top cylinder was between 100-105 psi and the bottom was right at 90.
We are working on trying to get something to check the RPMs

Oh we also took the prop off there are no numbers on it

compression is reasonable for the motor sitting as long as it has.
the prop #s, should be on the black ring Red in picture, you may have to clean it off. did you check the spark?

lolol I didn't even look there we didn't check the spark. I forgot my grandpa knew about boats and he said since its sat threw three winters with out us draining the lower unit oil he said to drain it and replace it and he said it would make a huge difference

I just took the prop off and the numbers were kind of worn but it either said 19 10 or 19 18

I was also wondering I just drained out the lower unit oil and flushed the old oil out and it took about half a quart and then I went to put the rest in and fill it I was wondering how much to put in because half a quart was to much to fill it and I was wondering if this is right

did you fill from the bottom or the top? suppose to fill from bottom, to keep air pockets out, if you fill from top, remove the top plug, and turn the prop several times a work air pocket out. look at the prop again, those #s don't make since. should be like 11 3/4 x 15 something like that.

OMG if I would of know I could have just did that it would of saved me a lot of soap and paper towels I was reading that you were suppose do it from the bottom when I got in from doing so I went back out and drained it then refilled

ok well will go from there. when the boat is not in use, keep the bow as high as you can, put a trash can or something under the tongue of the trailer.
i want you to do a decarb on the motor, instructions to follow, this cleans out the motor, gets the 30 years of built up carbon, and goo out of the motors innards. you will need a new set of spark plugs afterwards. Champion Plugs QL77JC4 gapped at .030. you can do this on muffs, or you can do it in the water, if you have close neighbors, the motor is going to smoke, and get crud on the drive or yard.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

afterwards compression.recheck

We are most likely going to do this out on the water but the only time we can would be on a weekend and there would be a lot of people and DNR and the DNR around here freak if you pollut anything but how would we go about doing this using muffs how would you do the WOT parts

you pass the wot part, and just let it run for a while. when you have the motor on muffs, do not rev it above 1500 rpms.

Just a question, with the muffs on and motor not in water, would it be done with motor in nuetral? I was told once that I would take the prop seal out of my old (87) merc. if I did it in gear.

Welcome again to iBoats! As you are finding out, there is a great wealth of knowlege possesed by the members of this board, and they are very willing to help. TD didn't get the Supreme Mariner title just for his good looks!
He'll help you as much as he can, but remember his advice will depend alot on the info you provide him. Don't worry about posting too much info. Better too much than not enough!

As for my attempt to lend a hand, let's look at your prop. If the numbers are illegible, there are calculations you can do to find the pitch of your prop. (Or at least pretty close) First, the numbers are the Diameter X Pitch. Diam. is easy to find. Measure from the center of the shaft hole to the outer edge of one blade to find radius then X2 for diameter.

I don't think it can be waterlogged because the guy we bought it from said he replaced it and we have only used it three times since we bought ito

sitting 3 years to where the rain can get to it, can do that. not to get you down but i have redone many boats the the deck was replaced and the foam not. think what we need to do is get the standard prop for that motor, and give it a try, we have no idea what is on it.

also still need to know about spark. start the motor, after it warms up some, take insulated pliers, and pull one spark plug wire, the motor should drop in rpms, but not die, replace the wire, and do the other wire. if this comes out good. we proceeded as planned.
