I have a shop manual, "lot of help it is" lol.

Does anyone know if it's possible to remove/replace the starter without pulling the engine ?

The manual just states to remove mounting bolts and move away, installation is the reverse.

From what I can see (and feel with fingers) this seems to be impossible.

Has anyone done it without pulling the engine ?

I suspect its the solenoid, ......... starter just clicks. It was turning over slightly yesturday. Replaced battery. Tapped/knocked on starter and solenoid, and it turn over once.

Some installations do require the motor to be pulled up some/removed .

I do it on a dailey bases,First check ALL your connections and clean as needed. If it's that tight to get to the starter drain and remove the manifold and riser as a unit.

Thanks for the reply's.

This is what I'm dealing with, little to no space to turn wrenchs. Checked connections for Negative, ........ I replaced the Positive Cable yesturday, good tight connection.

I've got the same engine in my boat (OMC 4.3) and was able to do this job in about 1/2 hr without any trouble...I removed the rear seats and pulled out the battery on that side and layed down next to the engine and was able to get my 1/2 drive long ratchet under the engine to get the bolts off...
You have some stuff my engine does not have...what is that silver cylindrical shaped object near the rear of the engine...if you remove that, you might be able to get in there...

The best I can tell is that silver cylindrical ( Thingy ) is a Hydraulic Pump/Trim Cylinder thingy, lol.

There is no way I can see that it can be removed without pulling the motor. There is one bolt that I can get too holding it in there, yet no way to get a socket or a wrench on it.

That doesn't look like a typical OMC trim pump but seeing as how this is an 85 that would be an OMC stringer drive which is different than the OMC Cobra that I have..so maybe that explains it...can you get your hand under the engine...the bolts are offset and go up into the bottom of the engine block. There are boats that have to have the engine pulled to get at the starter I was lucky on mine it's an easy job...

Discovered Tramsom rotted while removing the outdrive in preparation to change the Intemediate Housing Rubber Bellows to The Sterndrive.

This just isn't worth the hassle of repairing the transom.

Going to pull the motor, intermediate housing, and the sterndrive, salvage all the Teak, Gas Tank and all other parts for CraigsList.

Pretty much going to give it away if someone will take it, lol.

Can't bring the hull to the dump with the gas tank or the motor still in the boat.
