85 Chrysler shift pin questions

Ok, the previous owner pulled the shift pin on the motor, I replaced the pin (hoping that everything was still aligned). With the motor in gear (and engine off)the prop spins easily, so I suspect the yoke fell inside the motor. With the motor off and in gear should the spinning the prop require turning over the motor, and not spin freely (if it is actually in gear)? <br />Anyone know what size and type of tool is needed to remove the bolt inside the exhaust in order to drop the lower unit?

The bolt inside the exhaust snout is 1/2 inch.<br /><br />The prop should not turn freely while in gear.<br /><br />TMD

The worst thing about the whole proceedure is trying to find the gasket between the upper and lower housings of the LU. Maybe TMD can help with that.

TMD - The bolt inside the exhaust is kind of like a star - a 5/16 12 point socket almost fit, it is not a hex bolt, any ideas?

Someone must have changed the bolt at sometime. The original should have either been 5/16 12 point or a Hex 1/2 in.<br /><br />Try an 11/32 12 point.<br /><br />TMD

First of all I would like to thank TMD - Dead on the mark advice, fast shipping, and good prices. The exhaust snout was 5/16 12 point, I looked at my socket and it was all snotted up inside. Got the shift pin in correctly, and the gear case filled just in time to take the boat out for its maiden voyage with its happy new owner. It is nice to know we have the wealth of knowledge that TMD offers if we ever need it
