We just bought a boat w/ a 1985 Evinrude 115 motor and are having some problems. We took it out to a lake near by and it ran fine for about 20 minutes, then it suddenly died. We tried to start it again and it tried to fire a couple of times but died. After getting a lift back to the dock it would start but only run for a few minutes. By the time we got back home it would run fine again. Any ideas? Thank you so much.

Sounds like it might be overheating and shutting down. Tow to dock gave it time to cool as did the ride home. Do you know if you had water flow? I'm sure that year has a pee hole was there a good stream or not? Do not start anymore til you know. You may be doing serious damage.

Also there is a possibility that something electrical is opening or shorting.

Yeah, it appeared to have a steady stream of water.

Side Note: Previous to us buying the boat it had sat for aprox 2 years.

Does the temp sensor kill the ignition? I am troubleshooting a no spark condition and haven't even thought to check that.

The guys thought that it might be a temp control killing the engine, however there was no type of warning alarm. Is that always present?

20 minutes huh?

Did you check to make sure the tank was venting properly?

What exactly do you mean by "venting properly"? Why would that cause it to not run at all? The engine is getting fuel.

If your tank isn't venting it'll vapor lock. 20minutes of mucking about with a not-so-well-working vent is enough to do just that. If it's a portable tank it should have a screw-in vent make sure it's screwed out. If it's built-in it'll have a vent hose and a breather external to the hull, make sure it's clear.

After you've done that drain the tank and put in some fresh fuel with fuel stabilizer.
