I'm having a problem with my old smoker.
As soon as I get the boat up to plane it starts running rough and then stutters. The power out of the hole is strong and the problem doesn't occure until high RPM. The carbs are in good shape. I know it to be associated with an electrical problem because it had happened once on the boat years ago. Any ideas? Thanks..

Teeth; Was this at the beginning of the season? If so I would suspect a varnished
high speed jet in one of the two carbs.

------------------

Actually it was at the end of season. This wasn't a condition that gradually developed. It was literally over-night..

Hello,

Happening overnight...you seem to be on the right track to me, i.e. the electrical problem. If the timing isn't advancing for some reason...maybe. Although timing is mechanically advanced, look around as you advance the throttle to make sure all is smooth. Also, maybe a piece of varnish or gunk has inadvertantly clogged the jets, you might pull the bowls off of the carbs and inspect. If you see gunk, suspect this has ran through the system.

K.I.T. on this problem.

Re: 85 Force 125

Well, I checked it out and the carbs are clean. Any other guesses?

Well I've ruled out all fuel problems. It comes out of the hole strong but it just sputters around 35mph on the water. Almost like something is holding it back. The carb is clean enough to eat off of and the float bowls are clean. My engine has the four black coils and is running Champion Plugs. In fact they are new. Any guesses anyone? Almost seems electrical to me..

Kannuki,

You are new so we will cut you some slack. Try not to jump into a posting with another question. Start your own. ;) In an earlier post you stated you had a 97 not a 87. Whitch one is it? Either way I am no expert but I would think that if you have black and blue ignition they are not compatible and could cause you problems. There are some good force people on here who will know, start your own thread and you will an answer.

Re: 85 Force 125

I have a 1989 Force 50hp on my little 15 foot Bayliner. I was having problems with missing, erratic running, and general loss of power. In my engine there were a lot of terminal connections and I got thoroughly disgusted and ripped the whole mess out and soldered each set of wires together. I have had no more problems. Those multiple terminal strips are a pain in the *ss and one broken wire or loose screw will leave you dead in the water or teach you a whole new language. What I did was a bit radical I realize, but it's nice to have the motor start up and run like it's supposed to. Just a thought.

Out of the hole ok....hmmmm
A simple test is after plane, if your still running slow try pumping the bulb at WOT. If you pick up speed, you have a fuel restriction/problem.
Just a thought

Re: 85 Force 125

If a Force suddenly doesn't get up and go all of a sudden, thought to be electric, then most often it's 1/2 of a CD that has packed it in. Also go back to the old plugs if the new ones didn't take you to 5500 rpm and recheck spark plug wire caps.

Re: 85 Force 125

A bad CD interrupts the electricity to the coil and thus to the spark plug. When checking the good plugs make sure the plug is grounded or you risk burning a good CD. In the driveway is fine with the muffs on and good water pressure.

Re: 85 Force 125

Could I therefore remove the plug from the block, thn reinsert it in the spark plug wire, then HOLD the spark plug boot w/ plug installed, hold it against the block, bump turn engine and check for saprk at gap?
Is holding the plug by th boot safe I guess is what i'm asking or can I expect to be light up

If I do get lit up it must mean CD works, but helluva way to find out

If the boot is not cracked and you keep the plug grounded you oughta be o-k. If you move the plug away from the block (ground), it'll ground through you and make ya turn loose of it.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 85 Force 125

I have a 1988 Force 125hp engine, and I had the same problem. What mine ended up being was a leaking exhaust boot. So when it got up and running, the exhaust was making it stutter, because it was leaning the carbs out to bad. Try running it with the cover off and see what happens.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox
