Im having cold start trouble. When i give motor throttle, lever barely moves forward and rpms come up very little. When gears are engaged its fine. Is this normal?

Re: 85 Force throttle

Several things are interconnected and you need to understand the relationship to adequately service it (Just like a woman).

First. below the bottom carb you will see a tab on the shift link and also a tab on the tower shaft. These tabs Meet each other when the engine is accelerated in gear. They prevent the engine from being over-revved. They are NOT adjustable.

NOW: if the timing is too far retarded at idle, THEN, the idle stop screw wqill need to be adjusted too far in to obtain the correct 700-750 RPM idle. This in turn will pull out the spring loaded throttle quick- connect too far. When the throttle is advanced in neutral, the quick -connect will enter the body only and the throttle and timing will not advance far enough to actually speed up the engine.

SO: You need to re- synchronize the carbs and timing, re-set the idle stop screw, and be certain the spring loade plunger on the quick-connect is only protruding about 1/4 to 3/8 inch. Less than 1/4 inch and the engine will speed up before it goes into gear. More and the engine will not accelerate in neutral.

With the engine not running--FIRST: Take the idle stop screw and if it is not approximately in the center of its travel, set it there. The two lines scribed on the throttle advance cam should be at the roller. Adjust the two black plastic ball joints if necessary. This is just a starting point and will change with proper butterfly opening and idle speed. NOW: advance the thottle fully and see if the butterflies are level or substantially so. If not adjust the two black ball joints on the throttle link so they are. Now with the key off, jump the start solenoid and check full throttle timing. Cranking timing at full throttle should be 28 degrees before TDC--The last mark on the flywheel group of three.

Now, with the engine in the water, start it and check the RPM. Set it to 700-750 in forward gear in the water using the idle stop screw. Timing should now be at 0 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees. If you can not get to the water, set idle to about 1000 RPM in neutral. This will be a close approximation but will need to be set properly in the water in forward gear as it will change with propeller pitch and general engine condition.

Now check the quick-connect. If it is not out far enough screw it onto the cable a bit farther. If it is too far out, then screw it off the cable a bit.

NOW, your engine should idle at the correct RPM and should accelerate to approximatelt 1500-2000 RPM in neutral.
