Hello all,
Newbie here with my first major question on steering for this boat. Runs great idles good on muffs and was hoping to drop it in the water tomorrow but just realized that the steering wheel only turns about half a turn in either direction. I disconnected the cable from the drive unit and i can move the drive side to side with 1 finger. Trying to turn the steering wheel however yields the same stiffness or seizing if you will. On the cable i see the info: Detmar G4 14.0 FT System. I guess what i'm looking for is if there is anyway to free up a cable that may be seized? Or does it just have to be replaced? It is just a single cable manual system.
Thanks in advance,
Tony

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Odds are, there's corrosion at the aft end of the cable, Inside the aluminum tube...

Pull the cable from the tube, 'n Clean it out...
If that don't fix it,... Replace the cable...

Thanks Bond-O, I'll have to run back out and look at it again to see if i had any other questions on pulling it from the tube. What information would be needed for me to verify that manual #6 is correct for my model? My Engine i.d. is 5158698 and on the valve cover there is a Stern i.d. # of 5163051, on the rear of the boat the sticker on the upper unit reads 6880955?

I'm thinking manuals 6 and 10.

All ya gotta do is,... pull the pin from the end of the cable, 'n the Big nut from the end of the tube, 'n PULL...

Well, pulled the pin, pulled the cable out of the threaded tube....... steering still only gets about half a turn. Here is where i get confused though. if i put a screwdriver in the end where the pin was and basically unscrew it i end up with the entire aluminum end 8 - 10" and once unscrewed the cable is exposed. at which time the steering will work completely normal.

Is the aluminum shaft with the eyelet supposed to slide over a sleeve that the cable screws into?

Was afraid that was going to be the conclusion. :( Let the price searching begin.

I'm wondering. Can the cable just be replaced or ? I notice that teleflex sells the replacement cables or is there a possibility that they may not match up to my rack?

Ayuh,... Helms wear too,... Look at the pricing,... The "Kit" is only a few bucks more than Just a cable...

Hi T

I have an 87 Four Winns that had the same problem.... is this the same rack ?

Mine was very stiff..... I pulled it out.... attached a funnel to the end by the big nut.....hung it from the beam in the garage and filled funnel with penetrating oil and let it soak...... Then I made a handle that would fit into the helm end and started working the rack back and forth..... It took a few days but mine did free up...... It worked for me but it's always a long shot.

If you don't want to fiddle with it replace the entire unit like Bond-o said..... That helm is riveted together and does not have a removable cable assy.....

Good Luck

Hey rickryder,
My rack is different than that one, my cable comes into the rack on the end and my rack is a bit thicker top to bottom. the actual helm part appears to mount dead center into the rack.
