I have a 1973 85 H.P. Johnson and it is not getting enough fuel. I took it out to test it yesterday and it was only getting fuel to two cylinders. It has a carburator on top and on the bottom. When I throttled up the two high speed ports on the left side were spraying feul but the ones on the right were not so the engine would not reach high rpm. While we were going I sprayed some starter fluid in it and the engine reved so it doesn't seem to be the leaf plates on the right side so I believe that the high speed orifice is clogged on the right side of both carburators but I wanted to see if anyone else has run into this or see if anyone has any advice. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Re: 85 H.P. Fuel Problem

Sure, but there are no short cuts, you have to tear the carburetors down, soak them, pull the core plugs, blow everything out with compressed air, and reassemble with new kits.

On the chance that the hoses are original, replace them too as the originals are not alcohol resistant and will just foul the carburetors again.

Starter fluid is a really bad idea on a two stroke. Use premix in a spray bottle. When you are not getting oil to a cylinder the last thing you want to do is wash away what little is left with starter fluid.

Re: 85 H.P. Fuel Problem

thanks for the reply. i have already cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, I must have just missed some gunk. the fuel lines are new though so they should be good. the spray bottle is a great idea, thanks, I never thought about it before.
