If you have a manual, there are specific tests you can perform, using a basic Multimeter.
You should be able to test both switchbox and stator. I think these components either function or don't... There is no gradual deterioration or wear factor.
The cost of the Switchbox sounds a bit high..
I would say $200US New.
Check here.
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/collections/index.cfm?fuseaction=colle ctdetails&colid=01

Outboards are EXPENSIVE compared to cars and other machines.. S'pose they reckon if you can afford a boat.. you're wealthy..

Re: 85 horse mercury

guys the reason i am so gun shy about this is
that this repair shop will be the 5th one i have gone to in a 70 mile area not this motor but other ones i have and i have yet to find any of the 5 shops to be honest the last one charge me for cleaning my carbs and when i put it in the water it still would not run 67 50 horse mercury so i took the carbs off he had not even look at them they were full of junk so i have learn to watch out oh 85 horse was taken in because it would not open up and had to idle at 1200 rpms just to try to run in gear i dont mind paying if it will work but i hate to buy parts i dont need

You'd be well advised to check with some iboats members who can advise of local trustworthy repairers (I can't help much from Australia :D ).
I know Clams sounds like a straight shooter along with Rodbolt.. Haven't heard from them lately.
Clams is moving and Rodbolt is most likely boating.. I hope... ;)
While he's not around I might borrow his famous line
"Good luck and keep posting" :D :D :D

I'd be interested in hearing more about your stalling problem. I have an 850 probably about the same year.

I had a problem where it would stall as soon as you drop it into gear. I had a family friend who teaches outboard repair mess around with it for months and he never found the promlem.

Since then, I blew cyl 2 and I'm currently rebuilding. But in the event I get it running again and still have this problem, I'd like to have something in my back pocket.
