Re: 85 hp 1989
Have had to id a few motors like this.
Best results were with repair manual in hand while inspecting the motor.

Read thru the sections on ignition systems, wiring diagrams, lower units, charging systems, etc, looking for obvious items that include or exclude your motor. Process of elimination. One piece lower unit, or two piece? Brand of carburator? Type of ignition?
Style of waterpump? Pay attention to items that list differences between "B" and "C" models, as an example. More on this later.

Once you are certain of the year - then you can compare your motor to the parts diagrams located for each model, HERE:

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels2.asp?type_id=FORC

You will find that most of the common parts are the same from model to model, and that many have been upgraded to a part that is used as a common replacement part.

Lets take a look at a typical model number.

853F9C

The first 2 or 3 digits are the horsepower, in this case 2 digits, 85 hp.

The next digit (3) represents the features on the motor, power trim, etc. I have not found an index of this code. But your motor either has the feature or it doesn't.

The "F" designates the boat manufacturer that the motor was built for. Most mechanicals will be the same, but colors, trim, and labeling will be different.

The "9" is for the year, 1989.

Then comes the model revision code or production run code.
This one is probably the most important, as different production runs may have used different parts suppliers. Parts like carb rebuild kits need to be for the correct carb. Parts like sparkplugs and coils are usually not so critical. Many of these "not so critical" parts are the ones that have now been replaced by a common replacement part number, which is used across most models.

What specifically is different from model to model on the 85hp 1989 model year? Not much. A few different carbs were used. A couple different tilt and trim systems were used, I think.

Wow, sorry to be so long winded, too much coffee I guess.

What kind of parts are you looking for?
