I assume you've taken the 4 bolts that hold it in place out? Try sticking a couple of long bolts into the bolt holes. Don't stick them in far enough to engage the threads. Use the bolts and a big screw driver and try turning the bearing spool in place to try and break any corrosion. If you can turn it, then try again with the puller.

isn't there a retaining ring inside the housing that holds it in? If I recall correctly there is a two piece retaining ring that has to be pried out with a screw driver in order to get that spool out.

I believe the retaining ring is after the spool when you get to the reverse gear bearing assembly. (according to manual)
I am trying to disassemble my spare LU first before attempting my good one. The spare case is already trashed so I started braking the case and I still can't get the spool removed.

Yes the split retaining ring is removed after the bearing spool is taken out. Swiggins, if you're not too concerned about the seals, you can also try a propane torch and heat it up a bit and tap with a plastic mallet. You could use a hammer but I think you may end up with a bunch of small dents.

Sorry for not replying sooner...Um yes like he said try to turn it to remove corrosion and what I have done before on though ones is taken and threaded 2 bolts into the plate and grab both ends with a pair of vise-grips and try to wobble it cause alot of times it hangs and gets a bind.

Bet this is a slippering/bad clutchdog or not correctly adjusted gearlinkage. Now the edges at the dog and the forwardgear are worn. You have to replace the clutchdog and forwardgear.

Re: 85 HP Force outboard jerks intermittently at WOT (see video link, please help)

So I took my boat to a mechanic and he thinks it's an ignition problem. I hate to argue with experience but I am convinced it is worn clutch dogs. He is hesitant to open up the lower unit because some of the parts are obsolete. I asked if there is a test I can do on the water to confirm worn dogs. He recommended pulling a tube to see if it would start to jerk earlier. I just got back from the lake to test. The boat will go about 26 mph before it starts to jerk without the tube. It will start to jerk at about 16 mph while pulling the tube and it seems to jerk more violently and more often. I feel like that proves it is a worn dogs issue. Anyone have any other opinions before I pay for the lower unit to be worked on?

Before pulling any of the lower apart you should have drained the lube to check for shavings/particles, etc. This would have told you immediately if the dogs were being worn. You may still be able to do this, as it sounds like you ran it again after the mech looked at it. If there are shavings try grinding the dog, but as bad as it was in the vid I am guessing it is beyond working over. Check eBay for parts, or ask right here.

You'll find that unless this mechanic is a "Chrysler Guy", he'll be afraid to get too deep into any part of the lower unit. I found that out with my '95 Force and it's got a Merc gearcase, lol. You gotta let that thing soak in PB to get it to cooperate.

The good news is you've already got the part you need, you just need help getting it out. Find somebody to pull it out of both lowers for you, and tell them you'll take it from there.

Finally got my spare lower unit apart and the clutch and gears look good, hardly any wear on dogs. Now I need to swap them out and test her out. Results to come!

So here is a pic of the bad clutch dog. My spare looked brand new compared to this one. Got them switched out and just got back from the lake. IT RAN GREAT!!!! HELL YEAH!! Thanks to everyone for their help. Now I just need to fix the fuel gauge and it's perfect.
Thanks again!!

well im to late but ya. the dog in the pic is shot. i had the same issue a few years back. i was shifting into gear easy thinking i was being nice to it. while in fact the clicking i was experiencing was doing the same thing to my dog as yours. it began to jerk and bang to one side every 3-4 seconds just like yours did. however i have a 50. and it has the non exaust small pin drive props. the bang popping out of gear caused the cotterpin in my prop nut to break. then when i came down off throttle the prop fell off. went through 3 before i got the diagnosis from a marine mechanic on a catfish forum. i took the lower apart and walla. my dog looked very simmilar to yours. round edges. i never at the time thought of planing or grinding it back square. i bought a new one made by quicksilver from a repair shop here. $78. the forward gear didnt appear to bad and it was $180. so i replaced the dog. problem solved. has been fine for 5-6 years now. and now i slam her into gear. then throttle up.:D

Figured out the fuel gauge issue yesterday, it wasn't wired to the ignition. Labor Day weekend, here I come!!
