1976 850 Merc 4 cylinder. I fogged and ran the water out of the pump by running before I stored the motor last year. This year it ran rough when I put it in the water. I am gettin water in #4 cylinder. I took the plugs out and cranked it and there is a lot of water that spurts out of #4 only, It may have froze. What can I do, is this a cracked head or gasket?

Is it just dripping around the spark plug hole or are you getting sizible amounts of water into the # 4 cylinder?

pull the head. the only way to tell. unless you can see a visable crack on the outside.

Pull what head Tash? Have you ever SEEN one of these outboards with it's clothes off? It doesn't even have a cylinder head.

Pete... what you probably have is a leak around the #4 spark plug at the water-jacket cover, not into the cylinder. That thing that looks like a head is just a water jacket cover. You can remove it to replace the gasket, but at a high peril of broken bolts. See if it still gives you water with the plug installed. If so - it's that exterior leak.

Dry the area where the water is coming out REAL well and try to stop the leak with some sillycone sealer. Put a new plug in #4 while you're doing it so you can forget about changing that plug for the next 5 years. If it still weeps a little - no harm done, it's not getting in the motor.

Now, if you're truely getting water OUT of the #4 plug hole with it running, then your issue is with the exhaust divider plates.

-W

It shouldn't have froze. The cylinder can crack from overheating. Or if the lower main bearing blows, it'll take out the bottom crank seal and water will get in the bottom cylinder that way.

If you have water IN the bottom cylinder (not coming out around the spark plug) then yes the lower seals are more suspect than the exhaust plates.

-W
