Hi folks, I have fully serviced an old 78 85hp chrysler charger deluxe and am ready for the water except that the cone and spacer are missing from the prop shaft ,my question is can I just make up a spacer to take up the slack between prop and lock nut or do I need the spacer and cone, one more question are all these engines named charger deluxe and if not what is difference ? thanks for any advice. Re: 85 hp prop spacer and cone

The "flare washer" (cone) also called anti-cavitation washer, was necessary on some engines to reduce cavitation (actually, exhaust ventilation) on the hole shot. These engines had a 1 inch shorter leg than the older 2 piece lower so sat higher on the transom. Whether you actually need it or not depends upon how the engine sits on the transom and probably a couple of other variables.

I use them because I like the way they look.

You can use an extra thick 7/8 washer or two to space the prop nut or you can make a nice aluminum piece about 3/16 thick. If you don't want the fuss, Chrysler did sell a specific spacer. There was also a tapered adapter that fit between the prop and tailcone. It was originally used until the engineers found out about the cavitation problem. BTW: a new tailcone is about 30 bucks.

Best place to find out about Charger vs. Charger Deluxe would be at The Chrysler Crew Chrysler marine website.

If you send me your email address in a private message I will send you a couple of photos of the various combinations.

That's my '78 140 in the avatar.
