So I picked up a boat and this motor came with it. A Evinrude 85hp starflite but I'm told that it wont go in reverse. So just curious what the problems could be? The only thing we have been able to rule out is the linkage.

What year is this engine? Many of these early models (up through 1972) had electric shift lower units. They shift by electric solenoids in the lower unit. 1973 and later engines were mechanical shift.

Is the engine stuck in forward, or will it shift into neutral? If the electrical shift solenoid system in the lower unit experiences any type of failure, the engine will default to forward gear. (so you can get home in an emergency situation.)

I actually am not sure. The Motor and boat were given to me free because I wanted to use as a restore project. I had to do reserch just figure out what year it is. Is there going going to be a big difference whether it is stuck in forward or not? If so can you explain it?

I got cleared out my garage in case I have to take this thing apart on piece at a time. Which I'm ok with too I love getting my hands dirty!
