I have a 75 85hp that I just can't get the timing right on originally after I got it I noticed problems at wide open so I checked the max timing and it was way off I actually then found out that the belt was a tooth off which I had to change just to be able to set the timing. But now the boat is hard to start and doesn't want to idle so I'm assuming that I messed up the idle timing but I have no idea how to adjust it and the manual i have only talks about max timing.

Re: 85 hp timing issues

put the timing belt back where it was...if it is hard to start, and you have to rotate the distributor CCW (advancing the timing) excessively you messed up the timing...another thing that may solidify what im saying is this, once you get it started, if you can reach a finger in to the primary pick-up on the top carb and opening the carbs helps the engine idle better/or increases RPM's...your timing is retarded to far...symptoms of retarded timing is having to rotate the distributor CCW excessively along with having the primary carb pick-up being (picked-up) too early compared to the excessive rotation/timing advancement of the distributor....

Re: 85 hp timing issues

i believe i have the belt on right now because when i jumped the tooth it lined up the marks as per the manuals instructions. i am going to try the initial timing instructions that dwco5051 posted on my next day off and let you know the results.
