I have an 85 hp force outboard that I am working on. I got the motor running and it would only start and stall. I checked fuel pump and it was working well. Then motor would not start at all. Used starting fluid and started fine. The motor will stay running for 10 to 15 min., when trottle is pushed motor stalls out. Then would have to use starting fluid to get started again. We took carb apart and cleaned them and motor does the same thing. I hope that someone can help me I would love to have it out. Thanks:confused:

NEVER use Starting fluid to start your motor, it does not have any type of lubricant, use some of your regular (mix) fuel in a squirt bottle or WD40.

It sounds to me that your carb(s) are out of adjustment. It is Sounds like a fuel issue, did you check/change the filters? Link & Sink?

Have you cleaned and adjusted the carbs? If it runs at idle but not when you advance the throttle, this usually indicates a pluged intermediate or main jet. As far as starting, if the throttle plates and choke plates are not adjusted right, you willl not get the right mixture for starting. Yours sounds like it is too lean a mixture which can also be partially plugged passages or jets.

The FIRST!!!!! thing is do a compression test.Anytime you need starting fluid to start an outboard it usually means you might have serious problems.
Remove the plugs, advance the throttle all the way.Use a GOOD comp tester.
The results should be about 150# with a good guage. With a fair tester the results should be close to each other.Within 5-10# of each other.
Do the test then come back with your results. Then we can work on the problem.Jerry

Good for your Dave! ;)

It is always a good thing to decarb at least once a season. It helps clean the fuel system as well as removes carbon buildup.
