85 Johnson 15 hp issues

Hi all..I rebuilt this motor back in November and it has run great...I put prolly 75+ hours onit dduring duck season...I then used it a few months ago to shad fish..I haven't had any trouble with it...I cranked and let it run in a barrel like I do every week and I took the cowling off...it didn't sound right...it was running great...I touched the block to check for temperature and it shocked me!!? So it seems I have a bad ground somewhere.. Ally ground wires are properly tightened..the only thing I know is to recheck the way the coil packs are mounted...I remember that I had trouble with how the properly mounted with the washers and such... Any help on the correct way to mount them.would be fantastic...I may have washers on incorrect sides of the coils metal tabs and such...thanks yall

Hi it sounds like you have an open in your coil or spark plug wire some where. All it takes is a small crack in the rubber to give you a good shock. Run the motor at night in the dark and try to see which wire is arcing....Robert

Recommend you check ground straps with meter. I found sometimes what looks good can still be failed within the jacket.

All the ground wires checked out good with a multimeter replaced plug wires just because. I rebuilt motor and that was one of the few components I didn't replace at the time...ran it last night.still shocking me...and I saw where the bad ground/electrical leak is... Its the bolts that mount the coil packs on...I removed them and changed the washers around and such still.getting a spark...these are brand new cpil.packs so the housing isn't cracked or anything...it seems to be purely a mounting issue...I dont know exactly the sequence of the washers and contacts with the mounting bolt going through to the block to.ground them..HELP lol

I recall using some coils from CDI that didn't have ground wires. They had a metal band that served to ground the coil and this required adding some more washers to the mounting bolts so the washers would touch the block and grounding band both. The star washers should go against the block so they can "bite" into the aluminum of the block for good contact. As I recall, one bolt I had to add enough washers to that it looked like a metal collar surrounding the bolt.
