85 Johnson 150 problem

I posted last summer about this intermittant problem I had this last year. When I throttle up (nail it) from take off, or idles down and dies, or it just stays at the same rpm/speed and then all of a sudden it kicks in and launches. Sometimes while cruising it feels like it just shuts down then kicks back in. Here are some ideas i'm thinking of looking into as soon as the weather in Missouri breaks. Please comment with opinions. thanks<br /><br />1) fuel pump (sticking oring on VRO side of pump thats VRO has been removed)<br /><br />2)timing not advancing (sticking arm on stator)<br /><br />3)power pack<br /><br />4)rect/regulator (pretty sure its bad, had to jump around for tach usage)<br /><br />5)reverse diod (recently read about on new post)<br /><br />6)???

Hi bmurray<br /><br />Snap judgement says fuel. Like when you punch it. Either not getting enough fuel or getting to much and the air has to catch up. Timing advance should be easy enough to check. Put her in gear and watch the "armature" plate when the throttle is increased. Shouldn't be any sticky areas. Power Packs? Could be. Does the engine shudder or sound like it's missing when the problem occurs? The rect/reg may be a place to start. Get it replaced if your sure it's bad. You are correct about the tach lead. Losing the tach signal usually hearlds a bad regulator. The diode is easy enough to check. Should be able to read across it one way and not the other. Just another note or two....is compression good and spark plugs OK? When was the last decarb? Fuel lines and vacuum lines good. Also check the recirc system hoses. These are the ones that seem to come from nowhere and go everywhere. A leak in one of them will cause ya' some grief. Keep in touch. I learn just a much as I give with problems like these.
