85 johnson 50hp

Hey guys just got a new toon with an 1985 Johnson 50hp on it and goes into gear fine but is hard to push up or down. I am thinking I need to replace the cables but I dont know how to get the OMC control box open? Anybody know how???? Or is there something else I should be looking into? Thanks

is there any kind of friction setting screw that is used to hold the throttle leaver inplace once you push it to it's desired position? if so it might be to tight..

Yes there is a friction screw but it is loose and makes no difference either way I go with it untill I get it as tight as it will go.

I think there's a screw holding the throttle handle on at it's rotational axis. If I remember correctly it might be holding the box together there and maybe one on the back side? You will have to get the box off mounting surface on the boat to take a look.

I do have the box off and the only screw I can find is on the handle. It is an allen head bolt. i took it out but still doesnt want to come apart??? Something that Im missing??Thanks

You need to loosen the allen screw and support the control box so that the handle hangs loose in the neutral position. Then, push the allen screw by placing a punch in the center and striking it. When the screw moves, remove it and the handle will come off.

what kind of control is it..is it a side mount....with a warm up lever on the top.....if so it may be like mine..there is 4 screws on the back cover....remove them and the case splits....

It is a side mount OMC brand but there are no screws other than the allen head. Does have the fast idle/warm up lever though. I can take a pic and post if that helps. Thanks
