'85 Johnson 9.9hp needs a new tilt bolt

What's the secret to getting out the long carriage bolt connecting the stern bracket to the swivel bracket?Loosened the nut to flush and tried to drive it out with a block of wood and a hammer but it didn't bidge.Does it matter if the tilt bracket is up,down ,midway,etc.?The exposed mid-section of the bolt is fairly rusty and I've soaked everything with PB Blaster and scraped off most of the rust and scale. I just took mine out a few weeks ago. I have a 1963 75hp. I just used a large pin punch and kept at it. It took a while but it finally came out. I was trying to be careful not to mushroom the bolt as I drove it out. Turns out that the bolt was bent, thus making for a heck of a time getting it out. I don't know if bent bolts are common or not.

Thanks...guess I just keep on soakin it and then try driving it out again.I'm picking up the new bolt today.Was hoping to save and reuse all the old bushings.Wish me luck!

Be careful not to mushroom the head as stated above. If necessary, file down the end you plan on driving through before starting to ease its path. Soak it in a good penetrating oil, let sit, hammer and punch away, soak it again, let it sit, hammer again. IT will eventually budge. The first few inches are the worst. Others have said heating the pin body with a torch helps, but I have never seen any benefits of it personally, although my torch may not be as hot as truly needed.

I've had good luck using heat. Specifically, on a '76 6hp that had salt corrosion on the pin. You may have better luck with a press if you have access to one.
