does anyone have any advice on this engine? I am considering purchasing and have never owned an outboard. I'd like to know any pros/cons about this motor. Thanks!

Hey jdman,Welcome to iboats.Johnson 140 is a solid proven engine.Of course the condition of the one you are looking to purchase will depend upon how well it has been maintained by previous owner. If you are looking to buy it as a boat and motor package I would suggest a water demonstration.I would also recommend having a qualified outboard mechanic check it out before buying.
I've never personally owned a 140 ,however one of my regular fishing mates has had a 84 model married to a 19ft Aquasport since new and has run it trouble free.Just performs the recommended annual maintenance.
Hope this helps.Others will post and give you further insight.Good luck.

Re: 85 johnson sea horse 140hp advice

1985 is the first year the 140 was a "looper" (loop-charged, rather than being a "cross-flow" with a deflector dome piston).

OB's right - any of the 140s are pretty highly-tuned. Make sure you don't run gummy (old) gas, and make sure dirt/grit doesn't get into the gas. There are 4 main jets on that motor, one per cylinder, two per carb. If one of those jets gets clogged, the cylinder can run lean, and 2strokes can get real hot when they are run lean. You may not notice it, because the other three are running normally, but it can wear the cylinder walls, melt off the piston top, or sieze up the motor. So - be sure the carbs are clean in the first place, and if you let the motor sit for a while, run the gas out of it and/or mix the last tank with some gas stabilizer. Those V4s have carb bowl drains that are real easy to get to - if you're going to let it sit for a while, pull those off & drain it.

If that motor still has the VRO on it, I'd pull it and run premixed fresh gas, with no MORE than 50:1 oil. To be fair, there are mixed opinions on leaving/pulling the VRO.

Those motors have a rubber-vaned water pump, that's down in the lower unit (gearbox). The vanes will wear out eventually, so if you don't know for sure that a new impeller's been put in, do that - or at least watch your tell-tale closely.

Re: 85 johnson sea horse 140hp advice

Thanks for the great info, guys! I do plan to try it out on the water, any suggestions of what to look for when I try it out? Also, what is acceptable compression readings on this motor? Like I said before, this will be my first outboard, so any suggestions will help me out alot! Thanks again, jdman

jdman,Look for 100+ and within 10% on compression. If the seller doesn't know when the waterpump was last serviced it's probably time for a new one.Better safe than sorry. Also check condition of lower unit oil and overall external appearance as to whether it has seen bottom frequently.Minor scuffing of the skeg is to be expected.

Re: 85 johnson sea horse 140hp advice

That's a great motor. I bought one new and still running it. Warranty issue early on with the induction system. Was corrected by dealer by replacing entire induction system (carbs, adapter plate, etc.) and has run great since with only a few minor repairs (prop shaft seals, and voltage regulator/rectifier). I have about 750 hours on the motor and can say it's probablby the best I've owned. I expect to run it a few more years, then sell the whole rig for a bigger boat.

Make sure the VRO was upgraded to VRO II. I never had a moments problem with it and would continue using it.

Compression on mine has always been high (~ 150 psi all around).

I still haven't had a chance to get with the guy and try it out. If I buy it, I'll post here.
