ppj, Don't know exactly what your motor is doing because I'm not there, but I ahve had 2 motors surge at high speed. One had a bad stator, the other had bad contact between the flywheel and crankshaft. Pull the flywheel and clean the taper on it and the crankshaft

the carbs have been rebuilt twice now once from the marina and then i soaked them in a can of carb dip made sure all jets were good replaced new seat needle and float as well <br /><br />could it be with the adjustments ? there is a stop bolt with a black rubber peice i beleive this stops the linkage for the timer base where should that be at?<br /><br />and how can check to see if the sator is bad or good? and where is it? (sorry)

stators under the flywheel. U need to follow proceedure in manual to set up the timing

im about ready to give up! <br />grrrrrrrrrrrr. now the family took it out on the lake and couldnt plane out once we did .back down to 17 mph . dropped them off took it out by myself same **** yesturday it was going pretty good except for the surging up and down on high idle ... put too much money into the boat and motor to give up<br />i know im probably driving you guys crazy <br />beleive this motor is driving me up the freaking wall any ideas?

I Joined this site strictly to reply to your problem. I own a '78 85hp Johnson and have experienced the same problem in the past. Have you checked the powerpacks on the engine. You have two, each operate two cylinders. Sounds like your running on two cylinders. They will occasionally work properly even when bad which would explain your run of good luck after the fuel pump. They are 77$ apeice but an make a world of difference at full throttle.

are those those seal black peices with wires ?<br />when you had this problem did you also have problems like in mid throttle ? last night i pulle the spark plug wires off one at a time and on every pull of the engine dies down a little<br />doesnt that tell me that all cylinders are running?

That says all cylinders are running at idle speed. All three times over 8 yrs I had that problem the engine ran perfectly at idle and low throttle, my problem was always mid to top throttle. They are the sealed black packs (sometimes blue)and its usually only one that has the problem. I bought one, installed it, and if it still ran bad I switched it to the other two cylinders and the problem was fixed. I'm no mechanic but your gas, throttle symptoms were identical to mine. Keep in mind you cannot return these parts once used. The first time I had the problem an OMC mechanic made the diagnosis- from there I took the same course of action each time I had that situation.
