I just got a 85 kayot deck boat cheap because outdrive needs repairing. I would like to know correct way of dis assembly of out drive. Is it correct to unhook shift cable at motor and pull it through the inter housing to take out drive off? seller thought upper gears were gone but i think it might be just the water pump shaft. The gears themselves look fine of what i can see of them from the steering gear cover. I'm going to tear into it as soon as i get an answer this mourning so i can get parts ordered. thanks in advanced.

Pulled the cable. Got the outdrive off. It was the water pump shaft. Grooves on shaft are wore off where it meets the gear. The gear splines still look ok must have been a cheap shaft. ordering new shaft and water pump kit.

nice score... a good waterproof grease will support those splines for 3 or 4 years of trailer boating. Need to get in there annually if moored. I like Castrol Pyroplex blue.

80W90 is fine in upper, lower and intermediate. (80W90 fine in the tilt clutch too to keep it simple) - easier to find than 80W

It wasn't bad at all but I am use to repairing atvs engines and transmissions. I downloaded a manual just in case but was fairly easy. problem for me was wrestling the outdrive back on by myself and getting the shift cable back through. guessing maybe pros lube the outside cable to reassemble easier and also having someone else inside engine compartment for feeding shift cable would of helped.
