they will work in either direction, looking at the pullys of a standard rotation motor they turn clockwise.

... looking at the alt from the pully end, which way is the rotation. ....

Ok, the one off the boat is indeed faulty. No charging at all. The spare I have from a bad engine works so I can install that one.

However the wire color is different. I have a tan or what may have been a white. Then I have a red. Which is the sense and which is the exitation?

Red will be sense, White will be excitation...
Connect the red to the old red/purple and white to the old purple...

Ok got it all working. 14.30 vdc @ 1500 RPM
