:confused:Looking at a used motor...85 115 merc inline 6. Did compression tests and found the following...#1 (top) 74 lb, #2 100lb, 3,4,5,6 112 lb. What could be causing this and is this a really expensive fix? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It turns over..not free but relatively cheap...he was asking 600...now I suppose I have a bargaining chip but I am not sure how deep I am getting here. I cant do the work myself.

Top cylinder (#1) is damaged and yes it could get expensive if you take to a shop. For your compression test it looks like engine had a weak impeller and ran hot as #2 cylinder is low also. You can get a good idea of cost till you tear it down to inspect it.

$600 for that motor is way overpriced. I would look for a newer one, in good shape for the same price or a few hundred more. I bought a good running '93 Merc 135HPV6 for $1k some years ago. Way better motor, IMHO, and I owned a '77 Merc 1500 for 25 years.

This looks to be one tired motor,I think $600.00 is too much unless you really want to rebuild this one (project motor).
