Just aquired a 18xd.I already have a 90 15 2 stroke.This 18 is a brute of a motor for 3 more hp.Seem's to be in pretty good shape .Are these a good motor,Things I should watch.Thnaks.
I had one a few years back (same year Shortshaft)and it was solid little motor, I sold it with my old boat 3 years ago to a buddy and it is still running strong.
Depending on condition change the impeller and the plugs to make sure you know it was done.
Definitely looks heavy duty,The leg in twice as large(girth) as my 1990 15 2 stroke. And alot heavier,be interesting to see the speed diff on my 14 ft.it has a 6month old bill for a tune up and impeller,But I will keep a eye on it.
I had one on a fourteen foot Duracraft. It weighed about twelve thousand pounds, but it was tough as nails and it would make that fourteen footer go go go.
Hi all,
Almost bought one (but 83) in November then declined after making an offer as major trouble finding non-std parts locally and it was a std 83 18. Hope I missed some gold-mine somewhere that has all the parts you'll need for your xd.

Definitely a concern for a motor of that age, but I had pretty good luck getting parts for mine. I did once run across a part that had been rendered obsolete, but my local Merc dealer hooked me up with a shop that got it to me within a few days.
I had an 84 version of this motor that I ran for huge hours on a Lund S-14. It was a great combo. I never even put plugs in it. All I ever did was occasional impellers and gearcase seals. It finally wore out the splines on the driveshaft and in the crankshaft.
