I am having problems with my 70's 85HP Mercury outboard with thunderbolt ignition. Have replaced all the wiring that had the insulation crumbling off. I had to replace the trigger because the wiring was beyond repair. I can put muffs on the motor and start it, in my driveway. It is kind of hard to get started because it floods very easily, but I just pull the plugs and dry them off and go again. When I put it in the lake and got it to start, put it into gear and did a couple of loops, it sounded like it was missing. I shut it off, it would start no problem at all (no flooding), but when I put it into gear, it just quits. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like possible fuel problem to me. Does the primer bulb get firm when pumped? If not, try this test.

Pull cover off carb housing. Pump bulb a few times. Does fuel come out through the carb throat? If so, you are either looking at a carb clean/rebuild or a fuel pump diaphragm replacement. Both jobs are quick, cheap and easy as I recently found out.

I have a '76 85hp 4 cyl merc by the way.

Hi, thank you for the quick reply. I will take the cover off tomorrow and see if the fuel comes out the carb throat. The bulb does pump hard but does go a bit soft when the we are trying to start the motor. It seams to flood really easy?

Do you happen to know where I can find the serial # on the motor? I have found a service manual for Merc outboard motors, but I need to find the serial # to verify the date of the motor.

Thank you.

Just reading up on a manuel may be nothing but it says that the check valves may be bad or clogged check you manual about the fuel check valves

I had a 1984 85 hp and as I recall the s/n was on a plate/sticker on the starboard side of the engine bracket (the part that holds the swivel pin, between the clamp brackets) on the rear starboard side.

70s inline motors have serial number in center of triple clamp, between thumbscrews of transom clamp. Second choice is to look for serial number on block. Third choice is to match part number on block. Look at crankcase cover seam, on starboard side of motor for number. if that motor has a distributor, that would place it a 1975 or older I would think. I think the '76 motors have the ADI ignition (4 coils).
